Last day of NFT NYC! Still going strong, and the writing routine is ingrained in me to the point where Iām making sure I write something before I venture outside for the day.
Todayās Precap theme is aroundā¦
Status
Ah yes, the ultimate vanity metric. Throughout human history there have been symbols of status signaling āI am rich/cool/importantā.
Gold, big houses, the Amex Black card, flashy cars, these have been status symbols for some time and are still relevant today. But in an increasingly digital world, we have seen the rise of some other symbols that yield similar results:
Having a large following on Instagram/Twitter/Youtube/Tiktok
Being verified ā on the above platforms
And of course, NFTs!
Having been to almost a dozen NFT NYC events (not the conference) at this point, Iāve noticed a trend at the holders only events:
They like to show status based on how they dress
They tend to dress in more āstreetwearā
Itās more colorful and loud
Iām stereotyping, but I imagine the conference attendees to look more like this:
While the attendees of the holder events (especially the ones with concerts later at night) tend to look more like this:
Note: These observations have several biases (this is based on the attendees that made it out to NFT NYC, my personal experience, I havenāt attended all the events, etc.)
Note the louder brands, baggier fits, hype shoes, etc. Maybe itās something I notice more because Iām a little bit into this scene as well.
But why am I calling this out in the first place? Similar to the direction that fashion is headed with more infusion of āstreetā, weāre starting to see NFTs incorporated into this.
Instead of going to your phone to show you own a valuable NFT, why not just do this?
And if youāre a REAL fan, why not āwearā your fandom every day?
I believe weāll continue seeing more and more ways to show digital status in the physical world. More and more of this:
With the new generations that are becoming the future leaders of culture, business, and whatās cool, we will start seeing a renaissance of what status looks like. Keep your eyes peeled š
See you tomorrow!
